Current research

Evolution is the major basis of biodiversity studies and captured my attention since childhood, directly influencing the path I choose to pursuit in my academic studies until now.

Convergent and Parallel Evolution are the main aspects surrounding my PhD project, which will deal with intercontinental evolutionary convergence between South American (Amazonian) and East African Cichlids from lakes Malawi and Tanganyika. For make it possible, i will make use of genomic (NGS), morphological (2D and 3D geometric morphometrics) and ecological (Stable isotopes) tools in order to access all information possible within these two larger groups. The samples from South America will be collected in the Amazon river tributaries through Scuba diving and nets, and the African specimens and samples are available in our lab, in a standard number of approximately 100 species per continent.
